Minor Home Modifications for Seniors on the Gold Coast: 5 Simple Changes for a Safer Home

Aging in place is a beautiful goal, and for many Gold Coast seniors, it’s a dream they’re determined to achieve. But as we get older, our homes can present new challenges. A simple step, a dim hallway, or a slippery bathroom floor can become a real hazard. The good news? You don’t need a major renovation to make a big difference.

At Sarah’s Physio To Go, we believe a safe home is the first step to staying active and independent. Our mobile occupational therapy services bring expert care directly to you, and a key part of our work is helping clients identify and address fall risks right where they live.

Here are five simple, effective changes you can make to your Gold Coast home for better safety and peace of mind.

1. Install Grab Rails in Key Areas

This is one of the most impactful and affordable modifications you can make. Grab rails provide a solid point of support for balance and stability, dramatically reducing the risk of a fall.

  • Where to put them: The bathroom is a priority. Install them next to the toilet, inside the shower, and by the bathtub. Other high-value spots include the entrance to your home, a long hallway, or next to steps.

2. Improve Your Lighting (And Use Night Lights!)

Falls often happen when we can’t see properly. Older eyes need more light, and shadows can hide obstacles. Simple lighting upgrades can make a world of difference.

  • Simple solutions: Install brighter light bulbs, add motion-sensor lights in hallways and stairwells, and use automatic night lights in your bedroom and bathroom. This ensures you can see where you’re going, even if you get up in the middle of the night.

3. Clear the Clutter and Secure Loose Rugs

Occupational Therapy is a health profession focused on enabling people to participate in the activities, or “occupations,” that matter most to them. These activities might include:

  • Getting dressed
  • Preparing meals
  • Going to work or school
  • Driving or getting around safely
  • Managing energy levels or chronic pain
  • Caring for yourself or others
  • Participating in hobbies, community life, and social roles

Occupational Therapists work with people across all stages of life, from children to older adults, and tailor their support to each individual’s needs, goals, and environment.

This simple task costs nothing but can prevent countless trips and stumbles. Every object on the floor—a magazine, a loose shoe, or a pet’s toy—is a potential hazard.

  • Start with a sweep: Walk through each room and remove any items that could cause a trip. Pay special attention to walkways and doorways.
  • A note on rugs: While a favourite rug can add warmth, loose-edged throw rugs are a major cause of falls. Either remove them entirely or secure them with non-slip backing or double-sided tape.

4. Use Non-Slip Surfaces in Wet Areas

Slippery floors, especially in the bathroom and kitchen, are a huge risk. Fortunately, there are easy fixes that don’t require re-tiling.

  • Solutions for the shower: Use a suction-cup bathmat inside the shower and on the floor just outside it. You can also apply non-slip adhesive strips to the shower or bath floor for extra grip.

5. Upgrade to Lever-Style Taps and Handles

Did you know that everyday tasks like turning a doorknob or a tap can be difficult with arthritis or reduced hand strength? This can lead to fumbling, which in turn can cause a loss of balance.

  • A simple change: Replace traditional twist-style taps with easy-to-use lever taps. The same goes for doorknobs—install lever-style handles that are much easier to operate with a closed fist or elbow.

Making these changes doesn’t have to be a solo effort. There are government-funded programs designed to help.

  • Home Assist Secure (HAS) program: For eligible Queenslanders over 60 or with a disability, this service provides government assistance for minor home maintenance and modifications. They can help with installing a grab rail or fixing a slippery step. You can find your local provider or get more information by calling 13QGOV.
